Take a fresh look at your family’s dental health and your smile this Easter

Mar 09, 2016

Spring is a great time to think about improving your dental health and for making sure your family is up to date with all their dental examinations and cleanings. With Easter fast approaching, we thoroughly recommend booking your child’s dental appointment to coincide with their school holiday. Children’s holidays are the ideal time to get to grips with any overdue dental treatment and to make sure they are in great oral health in time for the start of the new term.

We Love Seeing Kids Here at The Cosmetic Dental Group

If it has been a while since your child has seen a dentist then you can be sure they will receive extremely gentle care from our friendly dental team. We are all passionate about preventative dentistry and want to make sure your child grows up with healthy teeth and gums. We take extensive care to ensure every child visiting The Cosmetic Dental Group feels completely relaxed and comfortable in the dental chair and aim for each visit to be a thoroughly positive experience. This is reinforced by providing well-behaved and particularly brave children with goody bags and stickers, and their preventative dental care continues in our hygiene therapy department.

By gently educating your child, we can show them that brushing and flossing is anything but boring and we can explain why it is so important, using terms they will find easy to understand. One thing we particularly like to do is to get a child to use disclosing tablets, colouring any plaque a nice bright shade so it shows up incredibly clearly. Brushing this away is a lot more entertaining for children than just brushing your teeth with plain old toothpaste. At the same time it helps to clearly indicate areas they commonly miss when brushing and demonstrates why great oral hygiene is so important.

What about Visits from the Easter Bunny?

Easter seems to be almost inextricably linked with chocolate and Easter eggs seem to make an appearance in the shops earlier and earlier each year. If your child gets weighed down with a metric ton of Easter eggs then it might be time to take a different approach. It could be a good idea just to have a chat with them to see if they really want to receive all this chocolate or if they would prefer to receive other gifts that will be longer lasting and which will not harm their teeth. This might prove to be a popular option if they are saving up for something so it’s well worth a quick discussion, particularly if you can get friends and relatives on board with your decision.

It is just about inevitable that they will receive some chocolate but you can minimise the damage to their teeth by making sure they eat the chocolate as part of a main meal, rather than snacking on it at other times, as it is the frequency of chocolate consumption that does the damage to young teeth. After they have finished eating chocolate, get them to rinse their mouth with some plain water, if possible. Wait at least half an hour to an hour before encouraging them to brush their teeth. This allows the acidity levels in their mouth to normalise, reducing the damage caused by acid erosion.

Are You Overdue for Your Dental Examination?

Easter and children’s holidays are a great time to think about booking dental examinations for the whole family and it also helps to lead by example, so if your child sees you regularly visiting a dentist they are far more likely to just expect it to be part of a normal routine. We take the same positive approach towards adult dentistry as we do towards children’s dentistry and we focus heavily on preventative dental care. By seeing you every six months we hope to catch any small dental problems before they become far bigger and more significant, and more expensive to correct. This also helps to avoid any dental emergencies as toothache can be amazingly unpleasant and never happens at a convenient time.

We also recommend you visit our hygiene therapy department for personalised care from our dedicated dental hygienists. In addition to making sure you leave with a sparkle in your smile, you will find they have an absolute wealth of knowledge and are people to ask if you have any questions about how to improve your dental health care routine.

Spring Is an Ideal Time to Improve Your Smile

If you are interested in getting a beautiful spring smile then we can also advise you on the very latest cosmetic dentistry treatments. Simple and quick procedures such as tooth whitening or even renewing old and discoloured fillings can make a considerable difference to your smile. At this time of year we often begin to see people who are planning ahead for a special event and it’s definitely worth starting to plan for summer weddings or holidays or any other milestones that may be coming up. This is because more complex treatments may take some time to complete and we want to ensure that treatment is not rushed in any way and so you can enjoy the process of seeing your new smile emerge.

Our dentists particularly love creating beautiful new smiles for our patients and are all full members of The British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. There are numerous treatments that can be used to improve your smile and every makeover is carefully planned after listening to your aims and desires. By providing you with a personalised treatment plan, we can ensure you get the very best results.

Treatments that will take a bit longer include beautiful porcelain veneers to transform the appearance of your teeth, as these will normally take several weeks because they are custom-made. We also offer a range of more complex procedures that include orthodontics and dental implants. You may think orthodontics will take too long to complete, but often by using a cosmetically oriented brace we can provide you with wonderful results within just a few weeks or months and if you start now for summer then you could even have a beautifully straight smile just in time for the warmer weather. Dental implants are an amazing way to replace missing teeth and while treatment will take a little longer, the results should last for many years.

Whichever cosmetic dentistry treatments you decide, we are sure you will be happy with the results.

Love your smile
