News from the practice

Love your smile

Now you can enjoy direct access to our hygiene services

Feb 25, 2016

The Cosmetic Dental Group is thrilled to announce that our patients can enjoy direct access to our wonderful hygiene team. Now you can contact us to book an appointment direct with either Katie or Tammy without having to book an appointment with one of our dentists at the same time. This is due to recent changes to the dental laws governing Jersey to bring them into line with the UK and we feel it is great news for our patients.

What Will Direct Access Mean for Me?

In the past you needed to book an appointment with one of our dentists before you could see a hygienist. Hygienists needed to carry out certain treatments under prescription by a dentist but this requirement has been removed for some procedures. Now you can have direct access to the highest quality hygiene services without compromising any aspect of your treatment. Under the new regulations you may book an appointment with our dental hygienist whenever you wish.

Why Should I Have Regular Dental Hygiene Appointments?

Regular hygiene appointments should form an essential part of your preventative dental care plan. By following this plan, you can enjoy healthier teeth and gums and all the advantages of having a nicely maintained smile you feel proud to show to others. At the same time, preventative dentistry can help your natural teeth last as long as possible and of course we hope for life.

How Can Direct Access to Hygiene Services Help My Dental Health?

Gum disease is a widespread problem that will affect many adults at some point during their life-time. It is the most common cause of tooth loss in the world, but with proper preventative dental care it is largely avoidable. With regular professional dental care which includes hygiene appointments, combined with good oral care at home, you should be able to enjoy all the benefits of having healthy teeth and gums with minimal effort and costs.

Can You Help Me If I Already Have Gum Disease?

If you already have gum disease, you will appreciate the kind, caring and professional dental treatment provided by our hygiene team. Our head hygienist Katie is particularly good with new patients who have severe gum disease (periodontal disease). Both Katie and Tammy are wonderful in helping nervous patients, who may not have visited a dental practice for a while, to relax and to feel comfortable while receiving treatment. With a proper treatment plan, we can help restore your dental health and your confidence.

What Will Happen During a Regular Hygiene Appointment?

Regular hygiene appointments will ensure all hardened plaque (called tartar or calculus) is removed from your teeth. This is a very non-invasive process that is not painful and which does not require local anaesthetic. It is important to remove calculus as it consists largely of bacteria which create toxins, infecting and inflaming your gums and greatly increasing your risk of gum disease. To remove calculus, we use a process called scaling.

Afterwards teeth are polished using a method called air-polishing or air-abrasion. This is a drill-free treatment that is extremely gentle yet highly effective. Using a special medical grade polishing powder, we can selectively polish your teeth. By using a mixture of air and water, we will ensure the procedure is fast and comfortable for you. The really nice thing about having your teeth polished is that it can have a slight whitening effect on your teeth. This is because it is good for stain removal and will get rid of some surface stains. Once treatment is completed you will have that lovely ‘just been to the dentist’ sensation of having really clean teeth.

How Else Can the Hygiene Team Help Improve My Dental Health?

As well as cleaning your teeth, we can offer help and advice on a range of preventative issues. Patient education is extremely important to our practice and you will find Katie and Tammy can provide personalised advice on how to brush and floss effectively. After examining and cleaning your teeth, they will be able to identify any areas they feel could use some improvement. Most of us brush without thinking about what we are doing, so it is easy to get into the habit of missing out some areas.

Receiving professional help can make a world of difference, particularly when it comes to flossing or for anyone who has difficulty manipulating a toothbrush or dental floss. By suggesting and demonstrating more effective techniques and tools to use, we aim to keep your teeth and gums in great shape in between visits. We can also offer you dietary advice, as often making a few simple changes to your diet or even to your snack choices can help improve your dental health.

Can I See a Hygienist for Tooth Whitening?

If you wish to have your teeth whitened you will still need to see one of our dentists prior to whitening. This is to ensure your safety and to make sure whitening is suitable for you. Our hygiene team can carry out whitening treatments that have been prescribed by our dentists and this procedure will still be under the direct supervision of a dentist.

Will I Still Need to See a Dentist Regularly?

It is very important to see a dentist at regular intervals and we strongly suggest you maintain your six-monthly check-ups. These changes to the dental regulations are simply designed to make it easier to directly access professional dental hygiene services. Our hygiene team is very well qualified and experienced; you can receive expert advice and referrals from our hygienists to our dentists if we feel it will benefit your oral health. This might be the case if they see an area of concern that would benefit from further investigation by our dentists.
