Tammy McArdle BScDental Hygienist & TherapistGDC No 193847
Staff name: Tammy McArdle
Position: Hygiene Therapist BSc
CDG Start Date: October 2013, It is coming up to my 4th year with the Cosmetic Dental Group practice and I couldn’t be happier to be part of the team.
Secondary School: St Bede’s in Lanchester, County Durham. I grew up in a small town called Stanley. I still have lots of family and friends back home and often go back to visit.
I worked as a dental nurse for four years before I applied to study Oral Health Sciences (Hons) at Manchester University. I qualified in 2010 as a Hygiene Therapist. My particular qualification means that in addition to my hygiene duties, I am also able to complete fillings for adults and children and extract children’s teeth. The law in Jersey was recently changed to be in line with UK law meaning I can now practice as a therapist in Jersey!
Lived off-island? If so where:
I am originally from County Durham in the North East of the UK. My patients will recognise my accent as ‘Geordie’ it has never mellowed!! I lived in Manchester for three years during university, which I loved. I try to go back to the city to visit uni friends as often as I can! I lived in Milton Keynes for one year whilst I completed my VT (Vocational Training) year in a practice in Northampton, and I also lived and worked in Oxford.
Before I moved to Jersey I was living back home working in Newcastle at the Newcastle Dental Hospital as a tutor where I lectured students and clinically supervised the inter-professional teaching clinic. I particularly enjoyed the practical side of teaching and found I could connect well with the students as I was recently qualified myself and had been in their position. It was really rewarding. When I saw the job advertised in Jersey though, I knew I was ready for a new adventure and fell in love with the island. I came over for an interview mid August, I spent a couple of days here, the sun was shining and It had such a lovely vibe to it. It really feels like home now.
Have you had any dental treatment at the practice? If so, what?
I see the hygienist regularly either Katie or Tiff (even the hygienist needs a hygienist sometimes!) I had zoom tooth whitening a couple of years back, which has lasted really well. Keeping white teeth does require a little bit of maintenance so I top it up with the homekit every few months.
I have had two implants with Jeremy which have been brilliant! I lost a couple of my back teeth unfortunately a few years ago. I’m all restored now though and pleased to have a fully functional smile again! For me, its good to have undergone these procedures so I can share my experiences with patients and make them feel at ease.
Dental goals for the year:
To maintain my healthy white smile
Favourite thing about working at CDG:
I really enjoy the teamwork at the practice. The team is great, everyone works really hard to make sure the practice is running smoothly for ourselves and our patients. It’s a lovely environment to work in knowing you have the full support of your colleagues around you. Once a year we head off for our staff away day, where the aim is teambuilding. We have done various activities over the years, I look forward to the away day, It’s always great fun and full of laughter!
I don’t really have a favourite band as such. I love music though and I really enjoy music festivaIs. I’ve been to various UK festivals including V festival, T in the park and Glastonbury which was an amazing experience. I love the atmosphere of a good festival! it’s one of my favourite things to do. I don’t even mind the camping too much! Although I must admit as I’m getting older I am becoming a bit more of a glamper than a camper!
I try to keep fit and exercise most of the time, I have my moments and occasionally like everyone fall in to bad habits but I try to keep on track as much as I can! I like to run regularly and I also do group exercise classes. I enjoy cardio based classes that are fast paced and energetic. They work well for me after sitting down in my hygienist role most of the day. You always know you’ve done a workout when your legs are like jelly afterwards, I think this is a good sign!!!
Do you live with anyone?:
I live in town with my boyfriend Jonny. We recently moved in together so have spent the past year getting our flat all nice and cosy. Its lovely and all is well (As long as he keeps up on his side of the chores!) I love living in town being so close to everything. Its great being within walking distance of work and all the bars, shops and restaurants.
If I wasn’t a Hygiene Therapist I’d love to be a Travel Journalist or maybe blogger these days! I think that would be the perfect job getting paid to visit all these amazing places and experiencing all different cultures. I love to travel and try to get away on holiday as often as I can. This year I have visited South Africa and Italy, both completely different but both absolutely stunning
I love living in St Helier as theres always something going on but I think my favourite parish would be St Brelades. My favourite thing to do at the weekend in summer is cycle to St Brelades bay which is beautiful and have a lazy lunch in the sunshine or a relaxing day on the beach.
Desert Island Essential:
I have to say my electric toothbrush of course, charging it might be an issue though!
Sweet or savoury?:
Milkshakes! I love milkshakes I could drink them all day!
What’s your bedtime?:
I don’t really have a specific bedtime. It depends what I have on really! I try to be in bed by 11 in the week as we have an early start at 8 am! Weekends can vary!
Ever broken a bone?:
I broke my wrist the first night of Fresher’s week on my second year of uni which was not ideal for a dental hygienist in training, it didn’t go down too well with my tutors! Note to self, beware of wet dancefloors.
I love a good musical so would probably say Beauty and the beast, old and new I watched the new one 3 times at the cinema… or maybe Bridesmaids, it always makes me laugh.
Tom Hardy! Wowza!
Favourite Jersey Restaurant:
There are so many lovely restaurants in Jersey, we are spoilt for choice here for being such a small island! I think it my favourite though would probably be La Siesta, I’m a great fan of tapas, I like a little bit of this and that. It’s always a nice atmosphere there and the staff are really helpful and friendly.
There are so many places I would love to visit, the list is never ending! I think my perfect holiday would be somewhere where there is lots to see and do, I like to keep busy on my holidays and have a good explore!
What word would people use to describe you?:
This is a tricky one! I’m sure it varies from person to person, hopefully it would be a nice word though!! I’d like to think I am a positive person, I try to have a positive attitude and outlook on things.< Back to Meet the Team
